The empty grain train led by a Norfolk Southern “Heritage Unit” (NS 1065, painted up in Savannah & Atlanta Railway colors) that arrived East Peoria Thursday evening didn’t continue its journey via the Iowa Interstate Railroad until late Saturday morning.
Turns out another NS grain train was being loaded at Heartland Cooperative’s 18th Street grain elevator in Des Moines, Iowa and another empty train was waiting its turn at Newton, Iowa. The train led by NS 1065 will probably sit at a new yard in South Amana, Iowa for a few days at least.
Myself and a number of other rail enthusiasts chased this train Saturday morning and afternoon. I broke off the chase at Bureau Junction then went home. It was a good chase, so I uploaded almost eleven minutes of video here. I got some pretty good action, I have to say!
Neat thing about NS 1065 is that the unit (model SD70ACe) was assembled only last May at Progress Rail Manufacturing Corporation’s Muncie, Indiana plant by subsidiary Electro Motive Diesel. Yep, the unit was built by a subsidiary of a Caterpillar subsidiary.
