Air Cargo Up Dramatically

PEORIA – As expected, United Parcel Service’s decision to end Decatur flights and DHL’s decision to end Bloomington-Normal flights  have dramatically increased air cargo volume at the Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport. Saturday’s Peoria Journal Star reports:

” Heard that while passenger numbers continue to decline, freight numbers are up dramatically thanks to United Parcel Services’ expansion at the airport using more and larger planes – coinciding with consolidation efforts elsewhere.

UPS alone recorded a 270 percent increase over year-to-date numbers in 2009 over last year, from 298,300 pounds to 1,107,500 pounds this year, and a 400 percent increase in March compared to March 2008.”

With passenger volume in decline due to the severe economic downturn, it’s good to see some positive news come out of the local airport.
