TP&W wind turbine parts train is shown at Bartonville on April 2, 2009.
PEORIA – The Toledo Peoria & Western Railway received its first wind turbine parts train of 2009 on Thursday, April 2. Union Pacific delivered the train to TP&W at Sommer (south of Bartonville off Rt. 24 – site of AmerenCILCO’s E. D. Edwards Station) that afternoon.
Union Pacific is reportedly pouring $250,000 into crosstie replacement along the five-mile Hollis – Iowa Jct. traversed by these trains. The line, which is in poor condition, and restricted to a maximum speed of 10mph, sorely needs the work.
The 62-car train proceeded through Peoria and across the Illinois River to East Peoria using Tazewell & Peoria Railroad trackage rights. Within an hour of arriving the TP&W’s East Peoria Yard, the train left for a staging facility located just east of Remington, Indiana.
The wind turbine components – tower sections on this particular train – are bound for the Benton County Wind Farm near Earl Park, Indiana. The tower components are manufactured in Vietnam by Denmark’s Vestas.
Reportedly, the TP&W expects to receive 35 trains this year containing wind turbine components, though not all will be routed via Peoria.
