Historic River Station Empty Again

Upscale restaurants don’t work in a recessionary economy, and Tilley’s, the latest to operate a restaurant at the historic depot in downtown Peoria used by the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad from 1900 to 1967, has closed.

Since restaurants setting up there seem to lack success anymore, I say it’s time to return the building to its original use – as a depot for passenger trains.

If Amtrak’s Peoria – Chicago rail passenger service feasibility study (to be released in March) shines a light on the old route of the Peoria Rocket streamliners, then maybe the City of Peoria (the building’s owner) should preserve the building as a depot. It’s in a perfect spot, especially if the fledgling riverfront museum gets built.

It doesn’t look like restaurants will make it in this building. Another use should be considered. Why not the building’s original use?
