UPS to increase flying at PIA

PEORIA – Besides the news that the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport broke its 1978 passenger record, the Journal Star reports that United Parcel Service is planning to increase flying there:

Plans are in place for United Parcel Service Inc. to add routes to Peoria beginning in March. It’s unclear the size of the aircraft or the frequency but the move coincides with UPS shuttering its Decatur operations.

UPS uses Boeing 757-200C’s at Decatur and Peoria, so I expect operation of these aircraft to increase at the latter. The airline will probably fly a Louisville – Peoria – Rockford roundtrip weekdays, and possibly retain the one-way Minneapolis/St. Paul – Peoria – Louisville route that has operated since June 2006. If so, that will put three 757-200C’s per weekday here – two in the late evening and one in the early morning. If the MSP-PIA-SDF route is dropped, the start of an SDF-PIA-RFD roundtrip would still double the airline’s service here. A weekday morning roundtrip operated by an Air Cargo Carriers Shorts 360 might end, however.

I believe this will be a great addition to PIA cargo capacity as it has gone down in recent years, It is great to see wide body service in PIA.

Yes, it is a great addition. I expected UPS to use 757-200C’s!

FedEx will probably bring 757-200C’s into PIA as they replace their fleet of 727-200C’s.
