WEEK-TV is reporting that MGP Ingredients of Illinois (which they incorrectly refer to as “Midwest Grain Company”) laid off 13 employees as of Tuesday. Atchison, Kansas-based Midwest Grain Products, Inc., reported a $17,243,000 loss for First Quarter Fiscal Year 2009, which management blamed on high commodity prices.
MGP Ingredients of Illinois closed its Pekin wheat flour processing plant on November 12, 2008 but continues to distill beverage, fuel-grade and industrial alcohol. The plant is a major customer of the Tazewell & Peoria Railroad, and uses several area railroads to haul its products to points through the country.
