DHL has announced that it will cease its U. S. domestic parcel shipping business by January 30. As a result, contractor ABX Air will discontinue flying DC-9’s into Bloomington-Normal’s Central Illinois Regional Airport.
United Parcel Service (UPS) is expected to benefit from DHL’s action. As a result, air cargo tonnage could increase at the Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria Int’l Airport since UPS serves it with a 757-200C stopping there each weeknight on its way from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Louisville.
ABX Air, formerly Airborne Express, ended regular flights to Peoria when it set up operations at Bloomington-Normal c. 2001. After DHL and Airborne struck a relationship in 2003, the former also shifted its flights from Peoria to Bloomington-Normal. Now, B-N has lost dedicated air cargo service.
Peoria is served by the two largest U. S. dedicated cargo carriers – Federal Express and United Parcel Service. UPS also serves Decatur, so DHL’s former business may be divided between the two airports.

Although DHL will operate in the US until Jan., they will no longer offer money back guarantee after Nov. 17. The DHL customers do not need to take any additional risks. They should go ahead and transition their shipping services to FedEx. FedEx is prepared to handle these customers. DHL customers can visit http://www.choose.fedex.com to learn how FedEx can give them superior service.
