At a ceremony that began at 11:00 this morning, the Greater Peoria Regional Airport officially became the “General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport.” A new sign positioned in front of the old one along the airport entrance road already displayed the new name as attendees arrived. Some interesting tidbits from today’s ceremony (which I overheard):
(1) Airport Director Ken Spirito said the airport will handle a record number of passengers this year and believes international charter flights will be a reality.
(2) Rep. Ray LaHood called the current terminal a “piece of junk” and credited Caterpillar’s local presence as the reason for the service we do have. He recalled that, as a frequent flyer, “half the flights he’s been on were full of Caterpillar employees.”
(2) H. Ross Perot spoke last. Good speaker he is. And good story about Gen. Downing.
